Have any of you watched the film, Gaslight?
It was set in the victorian era. So many issues I have with that one. LOL.
We've come a long way baby!
i just finished watching "splendor in the grass".
for some reason i love to torture myself with sad movies and sad songs.. the end of that movie is so heart breaking.
actually its bitter-sweet but when you are still stuck on someone who you cannot have it is heart-breaking.. i had to restrain myself from calling my ex.

The only reason I pay for satelite tv is to have Turner Classic Movies. That station rawks! AMC shows classics, but edited versions and also commercials

Wizard of Oz
Niagra
and the cheesiest, War of the Worlds! (watched it 50 times at least)
farenheit 9/11 ... sorry neo cons .
any film that gets a 15 min standing ovation must be worth watching.
i wonder if bush will go see it?!
Simon,
I agree with what you say about money and politics, although It is not just Bush, nor is it this happening only in American politics. Millions are spent on advertising and obviously the method works, or it wouldn't happen.
I can also see your point that Michael Moore is to you a political figure and that is where my issue is. The Cannes Film Festival has become a politically driven venue, without regard to cinematography, accolades to superb actors, or notice to brilliant minds of the film industry. It seems to me that the whole meaning of films and their critique has become just another advertising venue for politicians.
Personally, the hand holding, and air kissing between hollywood usa and politicians sickens me. Celebrities being used to sway world politics? They should stick to selling pepsi and nike shoes.
I feel really bad for the people who created many fine films and were shot down for their efforts because american politics once again needed central stage.

I left out TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD!!!
I should be beaten with a wet noodle. LOL.
One of the only movies in history that stuck so closely by the book it was adapted to.
Oh! And Gone With The Wind....
(well see, I am just a fool for the classics)
I will stop now.....I think....

I am sorry Six,
I think we cross-posted...At any rate. I view it differently (although I am enjoying all the views).
I first of all feel it was compared, both by innuendo by the msn peice, and by Simon who agreed with it for political purposes (by saying " I hope Bush see's this" or some such.)
As a long time film buff, loving the artistic aspect which is perhaps a big issue for me, yes I disagree. I disagree mainly over what I see as a hostile takeover of film-making for political ends. It just seems very blatent to me.
I think I am more upset over the artistic aspect than anything else.

Sandy,
I LOVE CLASSICS!!!
A Streetcar Named Desire (although the movie left out much)
This Property Is Condemned (the original coming of age film)
Nosferatu (so scary are those creepy casket scenes)!
Cat On a Hot Tin Roof (for some classic family dysfunction)
Just to name a few....lol
farenheit 9/11 ... sorry neo cons .

I also have a comment and question for Simon who made this thread.
Simon,
You make no bones about how you feel that the US dominates the worlds politics, movies, music, culture, and ideas. This is something that has long bothered you, and you have posted alot in that vein. I happen to agree that this is true.
Now I am wondering why you have chosen, out of all the movies critiqued at the international venue that is Cannes, to glorify a disfunctional and unworthy nominee.
I suggest that you have been influenced by the very machine that you have condemned in the past. It is my thought that in the same way you were hood-winked(and your family) by an american anomoly religion, you are now embrassing another american attempt at control.
I urge you to do study on commercial advertising and how we as a society are influenced to buy, buy buy....Why are we so enamered of "musicians" who cannot play an instrument? What is manufactured and what is real talent?
Please ask yourself if you are influenced by commercialism and repetedive advertisments. I say so out of care.
Sixy,
Yes IMO it was compared..."not since J. C.'s film"....compared it.

He goes about it in the wrong way....yes...
And IMO attempting to "hijack" an entire genre of film. A documentary should be devoid of opinion. A documentary is simply a visual sharing of factual events.
I feel the very definition of "documentary films" have now changed, probobly for the worst.
It is no secret that many awards (Oscars, Tony's, Emmy's) are politically influenced and commercially influenced. It is a sad day that those who oppose the Hollywood machine are blinded by the same snare. On the losing end are those great minds that actually are involved in passionate causes.
Instead, overweight hollywood camera hams dominate.....sigh...
I am with ya Tales.
